War 2 box office numbers have sparked a heated discussion among trade experts and film analysts. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr. NTR and Kiara Advani was expected to earn 125 crore rupees in its opening run but fell short of projections.
Many believe the release date played a major role in the film’s underperformance. War 2 was released on 14 August, which drew criticism from hyper-nationalistic groups as the date coincided with Pakistan’s Independence Day. The situation worsened as it was a Thursday release instead of the safer Friday slot.
Thursday releases carry higher risk because if the early response is weak, word spreads quickly and audiences may skip weekend shows. Friday releases generally perform better as they benefit from Saturday and Sunday viewership when more people visit theatres. Negative word of mouth can therefore reduce overall footfall and directly impact collections.
This is exactly what happened with War 2. In addition to the release date issue, the PR strategy did not connect strongly with pan-Indian audiences, especially considering the presence of Jr. NTR. The marketing focused mainly on Kiara Advani’s bikini shot, while the plot and VFX failed to meet expectations. The outcome left YRF’s Spy Universe facing one of its biggest setbacks.
