Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has outperformed the box office, taking in a better-than-expected $80 million from 3,861 North American theatres in its premiere.
With Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dan Stevens in the lead roles, Adam Wingard’s film has a 55% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. After “Godzilla” ($93 million) in 2014, this is Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse’s second-biggest premiere to date.
The movie achieved the second-highest opening weekend in the United States this year, just losing out to another Warner Bros. and Legendary tentpole, “Dune: Part Two: ($82.5 million).”
At the foreign box office, the film outperformed anticipations as well, grossing an astounding $194 million worldwide. It has only been out for three days, but already ranks third in terms of box office receipts.
The combination of “Dune,” “Kung Fu Panda,” “Ghostbusters,” and “Godzilla” shows the power of major releases in a short period of time. The box office performance of each movie is vital. ‘Ghostbusters’ has made $108.5 million worldwide and $73.4 million in the US box office in just two weeks of its debut.
The film cost $100 million, not including marketing costs. With $15.7 million from 4,345 venues, “Godzilla x Kong” significantly hurt the earnings of Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which came in a distant second. To justify its comeback to the box office, the studio needs to generate a significant amount of revenue.
