Fans of Bong Joon Ho, the acclaimed director of Parasite and Snowpiercer, will have to wait a little longer to see his latest project, Mickey 17. The science-fiction film, starring Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, has been postponed to January 31, 2025, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Mickey 17 was originally scheduled to hit theaters on March 29, 2024, but was delayed due to production shifts caused by the strikes. The film will also be released in IMAX theaters, promising a spectacular cinematic experience for the viewers.
The film is based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, which follows the story of Mickey Barnes, an expendable space colonist who takes on deadly missions and is resurrected by clone bodies when he dies. Mickey 17 is the seventh iteration of Mickey Barnes, who begins to question his role and the reality of his existence.
Mickey 17 marks the first American film by Bong Joon Ho, who won four Oscars for his 2019 masterpiece Parasite, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. It is also the first film by Robert Pattinson after his debut as Batman in the hit DC film The Batman, which was released in 2023.
Mickey 17 is expected to be a cerebral thriller with a high-concept premise, in the vein of Dark Matter and The Martian. It is also anticipated to showcase Bong Joon Ho’s trademark style of blending genres, social commentary, and dark humor.
