The New York Court of Appeals reversed Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction, concluding that the judge had exhibited bias by permitting women to testify regarding charges that were unrelated to the case.
Weinstein is presently serving a 23-year term at the Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome, New York, as a result of the court’s order for a new trial. In 2022, he was found guilty of rape in Los Angeles and given a 16-year prison sentence.
The ruling will be discussed at a press conference by Weinstein’s legal team. The court reiterates that evidence of uncharged crimes cannot be used to assess an individual accused of being illegal.
In February, Aidala contended that three women Dawn Dunning, Tarale Wulff, and Lauren Young were allowed to testify against Weinstein, therefore stacking the deck in his favour. The “Molineux” witnesses were called in order to demonstrate a consistent pattern of attacks by Weinstein.
Without disclosing the charges against him, Weinstein’s defence said that this bias targeted his character. The defence also contested the judge’s decision to permit the prosecution to cast doubt on Weinstein’s veracity in the event that he had chosen to testify.
