In a compelling reveal of information, famous director Takashi Yamazaki has offered an unexpected endorsement, during his conversation with the popular magzine Moviemaker.
In his conversation the critically acclaimed Yamazaki suggested that his latest film Godzilla can be considered an unofficial sequel to Christopher Nolan’s 2023 year defining blockbuster, Oppenheimer.
He based this deduction of his by acknowledging that the two movies, Godzilla: Minus One and Nolan’s Oppenheimer share stark thematic similarities, and how his work, albeit not a direct response, does share a set of elements that resonate amongst the two.
Famously known for his unrivaled visual prowess and cinematic finesse, the director expressed how eager he was to see Nolan’s creation on the back screen by stating that he remembers himself flying all the way to Taiwan, jus so he could watch it with Chinese subtitles. And this decision of his did not go in vain as it seems that the film left an atomic impact on Yamazaki.
His latest film Godzilla Minus One, was set against the backdrop of post-World War II Tokyo, in which he introduced the iconic lizard monster as a crisis born from the devastating power of the atomic bomb. Citing this, Yamazaki underscored the common theme between the 2 films, further adding that the fear and threat of (a nuclear warfare) are certainly real and worry some.
It is only due to the creation of the atom that Godzilla is born, establishing a link between the events of the two movies.
Released last year in December, Godzilla had gone on to become the highest grossing Japanese-language movie in the United States and even surpassed the prestigious $50 million mark at the domestic box office. Yamazaki concluded the interview stating that he considers this feat a culmination of his entire filmography and his efforts of blending the background in special effects to deliver a visually compelling and emotionally resonant experience.
