Bollywood’s struggle to do justice to Telugu stars is more than just about mismatched scripts – it’s a symptom of an industry that’s chasing market expansion over good storytelling.
The recent buzz around “War 2” with Hrithik Roshan and Telugu superstar Junior NTR is a perfect example. Instead of crafting a role that utilises Junior NTR’s immense talent and charm, the teaser shows him as just another addition to the franchise with no understanding of what makes him a phenomenon in Telugu cinema.

This isn’t a one off. The pattern has repeated with big ticket projects like Adipurush and Zanjeer where Prabhas and Ram Charan were cast more for their market value than for roles that suited them. The result is disappointing films that don’t showcase the stars’ talent or satisfy the audience.
Earlier collaborations – like Kamal Haasan or Rajinikanth in the 80s and 90s – felt organic, the actors fit into the story seamlessly rather than being paraded as “pan-Indian” attractions. If Bollywood wants to truly succeed with Telugu stars it has to move beyond treating them as mere crowd pullers.

Directors and writers have to understand and celebrate their unique appeal just like Telugu filmmakers do. Till then these collaborations will be missed opportunities and the magic of these stars will continue to get lost in translation.
