Bollywood has a history of making disappointing remakes of some of the best South Indian films. Movies like Ready, Vikramarkudu, Pokiri, Okkadu, Maryada Ramanna, Kaithi, Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Driving License, Stalin, Ramana, and many others have fallen short due to poor execution.
One notable instance was the remake of the Marathi blockbuster Sairaat, which turned into Dhadak starring Jahnvi Kapoor. Despite its decent box office performance, Dhadak couldn’t match the original.
Now, Karan Johar is set to produce Dhadak 2, a spiritual sequel starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Animal fame Tripiti Dimri, based on Mari Selvaraj’s Pariyerum Perumal produced by Pa Ranjith.
The original Tamil film, released in 2018, delved into caste struggles in rural Tamil Nadu, focusing on the discrimination faced by the hero from the oppressed Pallar caste.
Pariyerum Perumal received critical acclaim for its raw and hard-hitting portrayal of caste dynamics and societal issues. It sparked important conversations but also faced controversy for its bold approach. The film’s impactful soundtrack added to its praise.
The question remains whether Bollywood can capture the essence of the original or will fall short by adding superficial gloss, missing the depth of the original’s social commentary.
