Mythri Movie Makers and legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja have finally reached an out of court settlement after weeks of legal tension. The production house has reportedly agreed to pay Rs. 50 lakh to resolve copyright disputes involving songs used in the films Dude and Good Bad Ugly. With this payment, the issue has been officially closed.
This settlement comes after Ilaiyaraaja objected to the use of his classic track Karutha Machan in Dude. Although the makers had already paid around Rs. 15 to 20 lakh to music label Sony Music India for licensing two songs, Ilaiyaraaja’s team claimed his moral rights were violated because his personal consent was not taken.
This is not the first time a production has faced trouble over his music. Another film of Mythri, Good Bad Ugly, was earlier removed from Netflix following similar legal action from Ilaiyaraaja. Over time, it has become clear that with his compositions, simply obtaining label rights is not enough. His direct approval is mandatory.
Ilaiyaraaja has always been very protective of his work and this case reinforces that stance. His position is not just about copyright. It is also about artistic ownership and legacy.
For filmmakers, this incident is a reminder to double check music rights carefully, especially when dealing with classic songs. Even a small oversight can stop a release, affect OTT deals, or cost far more later.
With this settlement now wrapped up, both sides move forward. However, the message is clear. Using Ilaiyaraaja’s music requires more than permissions. It requires respect.
