Usually, we see Hollywood films being remade and ‘freemade’ in the Indian film industry. Sometimes, it is the entire film and most times, it is certain scenes from English films that ‘inspire’ certain Indian films. But for a change, for the first time ever, an Indian film is being remade in English.
The said film is Drishyam which is one of the iconic blockbusters in South Indian cinema. The film was originally shot with Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and it was later remade in practically every language in the Indian film industry. Now, Drishyam is being remade in Hollywood with the original makers, Panorama Films partnering with US’s Gulfstream Picture for the production of the Hollywood remake.
A part of this credit might be going to RRR for taking Indian cinema well and truly into the Hollywood space. The Rajamouli directorial was the first Indian film to prove that an Indian film will be accepted by the English folk and this opened up new avenues to Indian filmmakers now. The way RRR attracted the western folk, trended on Netflix, and ultimately won the Oscars made Indian cinema go mainstream.
While Drishyam going Hollywood is undeniably due to the merit of the film, a certain degree of RRR effect on the same can’t be dismissed. RRR showed Hollywood that Indian films can have an impact on global cinema, and that too substantially. This could’ve, in a way, prompted a Hollywood remake of Drishyam which is a well-crafted family drama thriller.
