Movie Tickets Capped at Rs 200: PVR-INOX Shocked?

Karnataka movie ticket price capped at Rs 200

The Karnataka government has proposed a uniform Rs 200 cap on movie tickets, including taxes, across all theaters and multiplexes in the state. This draft notification could significantly impact cinema chains like PVR and Inox, as Karnataka is a major market for them.

Currently, average ticket prices in the state hover around Rs 260. Premium formats such as IMAX and 4D often charge Rs 600–1000 on weekends in Bengaluru. The proposed cap would reduce prices by nearly 30%, delaying returns on investments for high-end screens.

To balance costs, theater operators may raise food and beverage prices. Despite challenges for chains, the move benefits audiences, making cinema more affordable for people from all financial backgrounds. Previously, Karnataka tried regulating ticket prices in 2017, but the plan faced court challenges.

In 2021, the Karnataka High Court allowed premium pricing for luxury formats like IMAX and recliners. The new draft exempts only screens with fewer than 75 seats, requiring all other formats to follow the Rs 200 cap.

The draft notification is open for public feedback for 15 days. The government will review objections before finalizing the rule via a gazette notification, potentially reshaping cinema ticket pricing in the state.
