The Kerala Film Producers’ Association (KFPA) has released the official budgets and box office collections for 15 Malayalam films that debuted in March 2025. The results are disastrous. Empuraan is the only film to be profitable. The others struggled at the box office.

According to KFPA’s partial figures, Empuraan, starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj, grossed 24.65 crore in Kerala theatres within its first five days of release, until March 31.
Despite rumors about its budget, the producers’ association lists it at 175.66 crore, making it the most expensive Malayalam film ever. Empuraan has reportedly collected 325 crores worldwide, including OTT revenue.

In contrast, most other films from March had poor performances. Maruvasham, made on a budget of 78 lakh, earned just 60,000.
Pralayashesham Oru Jalakanyaka, which cost 1.5 crore to make, grossed 64 lakhs. Aranyam, with an 85-lakh budget, earned 22,000. Leech, with a 1 crore budget, collected 45,000. Kaadakam made with 30 lakhs and earned 80,000. Rakshasy The Lady Killer, costing 60 lakhs, made 4 lakhs. Dasettante Cycle, made for 70 lakhs, earned 8 lakhs.

A few films running in theatres showed modest results. Ouseppinte Osiyath, with a 4 crores budget, grossed 45 lakhs. Pariwar (2.6 crore budget) earned 26 lakhs. Vadakkan (3.65 crore budget) made 20 lakhs. Abhilasham (4 crore budget) collected 15 lakhs.
The total combined budget for all 15 films is 194.42 crore. The total theatre share amounted to 25.88 crore.
The release of partial collection data by the KFPA has faced criticism in the industry. Incomplete figures can make even successful films appear as failures, causing frustration among filmmakers.
Thudarum released this week is expected to be a big hit and real comeback of Mohanlal.
