Nagarjuna’s Annapurna Film Distribution wing and Allu Aravind’s Geetha Film Distribution wing are now ruing a missed opportunity pertaining to Sardar and Kantara respectively. Wonder what’s the story behind it? Here’s a report.
Initially, Annapurna and Geetha had the opportunity to buy Sardar and Kantara Telugu rights on an outright basis respectively. But incidentally, both of them backed out in the last minute and decided to release the film on a percentage basis.
Cut to now, both Sardar and Kantara are box office winners. Particularly, Kantara is proving to be a huge moneyspinner in the Telugu states. After grossing Rs 30 crores till now, it looks locked in for a 3rd week and possibly even 4th week run in the Telugu states. It can be termed a jackpot.
Comparatively, Sardar has smaller profits when compared to Kantara in Telugu states so Nagarjuna would be feeling less regret than Allu Aravind, who distributed Kantara on advance basis.
Both the distribution houses took 15-20% commission for releasing the films here and what they made from these films is peanuts, when compared to the actual theatrical returns of these box office hits. This will just cover their maintenance and logistical charges, while they could’ve made profits had they bought them on outright basis.
