Ever since OG 2 was announced, excitement among Pawan Kalyan fans has gone to another level. While the first film established Ojas Gambheera as a stylish gangster, the sequel is expected to significantly expand the franchise’s mythology by introducing a historical connection involving Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
OG begins in the 1940s, moves through 1973, and concludes in 1993. According to industry buzz, OG 2 is said to revisit the events of the early 1940s and explore the origins of the Gambheera family.
The most interesting aspect is the reported connection to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
In Sujeeth‘s fictional universe, the story is rooted in World War II. As the Indian National Army (INA) allied with Japan, Netaji is believed to have sent a group of elite Indian soldiers to Japan for advanced military training. After Independence, some of these highly trained soldiers reportedly remained in Japan, became part of the underground world, and eventually created a powerful Yakuza lineage.
Pawan Kalyan’s character, Ojas Gambheera, is said to be a descendant of these INA warriors, explaining his exceptional sword-fighting skills and samurai-style combat.
Reports further suggest that OG 2 will function largely as a prequel, with Pawan Kalyan reportedly playing an ancestral character named Lieutenant Jay Gambheera. The story is also expected to involve the mysterious Black Dragon Society, giving the franchise an international historical backdrop unlike anything seen in Telugu commercial cinema.
On paper, the idea sounds exciting and gives the OG universe much greater depth.
However, Sujeeth also faces a major challenge.
The first OG generated phenomenal pre-release hype and opened strongly at the box office. But despite its stylish presentation and action sequences, it could not achieve full breakeven at the box office, with many viewers feeling the writing did not completely match the hype. Audiences expected a stronger story, better twists, and a tighter screenplay.
This time, stylish elevations alone may not be enough. Audiences already know Sujeeth can present Pawan Kalyan stylishly. What they will expect now is a stronger screenplay, better emotional depth, and a story that fully justifies expanding the OG universe.
The reported Netaji and INA connection certainly adds freshness. But it will only work if it is executed well with clarity and precision.
Given Pawan Kalyan’s political responsibilities as Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister, scheduling will also be crucial.
The bigger question is whether Sujeeth can finally overcome the one criticism that has followed him throughout his career. Both Saaho and OG were praised for their stylish presentation, world-building, and ambitious ideas. But many felt the screenplays lacked the emotional grip needed to fully capitalize on those strengths.
OG 2 undoubtedly has the potential to become much bigger than the first film.
But for that to happen, Sujeeth will have to focus less on elevations and more on writing. If he can match his visual imagination with an equally engaging screenplay, the sequel could elevate the OG franchise to an entirely new level.
