Shankar and Kamal Haasan’s highly anticipated sequel, Indian 2, released on July 12, failed to meet even minimum expectations and bombed very badly at the box office.
The film became a subject of mockery during its theatrical run, and things worsened after its release on OTT. Shankar was heavily trolled for producing such a ridiculous and caricatured film. Just when everyone thought the aftermath of Indian 2 had died down, another controversy has now erupted.
According to the initial plan, the film was set to premiere digitally in Tamil and Telugu four weeks after its release. However, in a surprising twist, the Hindi dubbed version appeared online in less than six weeks.
This early digital release of the Hindi version has triggered a legal notice from the Multiplex Association of India (MAI).
According to MAI’s rules, films released in Hindi must adhere to an eight-week window before streaming on OTT platforms.
Violating this guideline jeopardizes future releases in major multiplex chains like PVRInox and Cinepolis.
The MAI is using this incident to reinforce its policy, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the eight-week OTT window.
They aim to set a precedent to prevent other producers from bypassing the established rules.
As the industry watches closely, Shankar and his team face mounting scrutiny, and Indian 3 is already slated for a 2025 release, leaving fans wondering about the future of the third part.
There seems to be no end to Shankar and his team’s misery for making Indian 2.
