SS Rajamouli is set to move away from the placeholder title SSMB29 for his upcoming global action adventure with Mahesh Babu. This is similar to how his blockbuster RRR, which began as a tentative combination of the initials of Rajamouli, Ram Charan, and Jr. NTR, ended up retaining the short form as its official title due to immense popularity.
As per Rahul Raut of PeepingMoon, the film will be called Gen 63, inspired by Mahesh Babu’s character, who hails from the 63rd generation of a respected lineage. The story traces his mythical journey to find rare and powerful artifacts, drawing from the Ramayana while blending in science fiction themes. A large part of the plot takes place in Kashi, known for its spiritual and historical significance, making it a culturally rich backdrop for the narrative.
This marks the first time since his debut film Student No. 1 that Rajamouli has chosen a complete English title. While Student No. 1 was still familiar to Telugu speaking audiences, Gen 63 carries a more international feel, in line with Rajamouli’s global vision. His previous film RRR also had an English abbreviation but retained a Telugu meaning as Roudram Ranam Rudhiram, giving it both local and global appeal.
Rajamouli aims to create a cinematic universe merging India’s cultural heritage with mythology and futuristic storytelling. Mahesh Babu will appear in varied looks, showcasing his character’s evolution across the film. Priyanka Chopra is reportedly playing a bold explorer, and Prithviraj Sukumaran will take on the role of a high tech and ruthless antagonist. The cast will also include notable names from multiple Indian film industries, adding to its pan India scale.
The crew is scheduled to head to Tanzania on August 15 for a month long schedule focusing on grand action and jungle scenes. Initially, Kenya was chosen for filming in July, but political unrest led to a change in plans. South Africa was also considered but dropped due to logistical constraints. Tanzania was finalised as its ancient landscapes perfectly match the film’s timeless and otherworldly atmosphere.
The shooting is expected to finish by mid 2026, with Gen 63 planned for a worldwide theatrical release in the summer of 2027.
