Bhola Shankar BRO Ravanasura Hunt

A few years ago in Tollywood, remakes were a prevalent trend. Telugu cinema often recreated super hits from other languages, featuring iconic stars like Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, Balakrishna, and Nagarjuna.

However, the landscape shifted with the rise of OTT platforms, altering the dynamics of audience consumption. The common factor between some of the biggest disasters this year was they were all remakes.

The biggest disappointment was “Bhola Shankar,” marking a significant setback in Megastar Chiranjeevi’s illustrious career. Directed by Meher Ramesh, the film was a Telugu adaptation of the Tamil blockbuster Vedalam. The Telugu version failed to resonate with the audience, receiving atrocious reviews from its first day of release.

Similarly, Pawan Kalyan’s “Bro” also fell victim to the remake curse. An adaptation of the Tamil hit ‘Vinodaya Sitham,’ directed by Samudrakani, the film underwent alterations that failed to salvage its fate. Despite the involvement of Trivikram, the movie struggled big time at the box office.

Ravanasura, another remake, drew inspiration from the Bengali film ‘Vinci Da.’ Directed by Sudheer Varma, the film, featuring Ravi Teja in a negative role, failed to make an impact, meeting a disappointing end.

Further adding to the list of letdowns was “Hunt,” an adaptation of the Malayalam movie ‘Mumbai Police.’ This was another resounding flop in Sudhir Babu’s sagging career. The film flopped mainly because the Telugu audience had already watched the original Malayalam film on OTT.

Even the creative prowess of director Krishna Vamsi couldn’t salvage the fate of “Rangamarthanda,” a Telugu remake of the Marathi classic ‘Natasamrat.’ Other notable failures include “Buttabomma” and “Kota Bommali PS”, both failing to click with the Telugu audience.
