Toxic’s Ultra Bold Teaser: Worse Backlash Than Peddi?

Yash and Lady Gang in Toxic teaser

Yash’s much-awaited pan-India film Toxic has finally released its latest promotional teaser, introducing the film’s powerful “Lady Gang.” Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the high-budget action drama has been generating curiosity ever since its announcement, and this new glimpse has only intensified the discussion.

Featuring Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Rukmini Vasanth, Tara Sutaria, and Huma Qureshi, the teaser presents the women as stylish, dangerous, and action-oriented. Except for Kiara, the rest of the female cast appears to be involved in intense combat sequences alongside their glamorous avatars.

However, what has generated the biggest conversation isn’t the action.

The teaser is packed with sensual imagery, intimate moments, and provocative dialogues. A female voiceover says, “Love makes monsters of women. It is a beautiful illusion if one understands the depth of its deception,” while the visuals cut between romance, violence, and psychological drama.

Towards the end, another line grabs attention:

“But here comes a plot twist, ladies… Don’t forget the predictable spectacle of men and their cocks.”

The teaser also shows Yash suggestively putting a gun into a woman’s mouth before pulling the trigger.

That shot alone has triggered intense discussions across social media, with many predicting that the film could become one of the most debated releases of the year. Some couldn’t believe the film was directed by a woman. Some called it almost pornographic, while others said the teaser would put even men to shame.

Several users also immediately began comparing Toxic with Peddi, which faced heavy backlash a few weeks ago.

However, comparing Peddi and Toxic is quite foolish.

The backlash against Peddi was never simply because Janhvi Kapoor‘s character was portrayed in a glamorous or sensual manner. The strongest backlash came from the way the central romance was written. A section of viewers felt uncomfortable because Ram Charan’s character repeatedly pursued and objectified the heroine. The biggest flashpoint was a controversial sequence involving a kiss without explicit consent that many felt the film later treated as a playful romantic moment, despite it being borderline sexual abuse.

Peddi was also trolled because many viewers felt Janhvi Kapoor’s character had little importance in the story beyond serving as the hero’s romantic interest and being presented through a sexualized lens.

At least based on the teaser, Toxic appears to be approaching its female characters differently.

The women are portrayed as powerful, dangerous, and fully in control of their own choices. The sensuality shown in the teaser appears to be part of their badass characterizations rather than presenting them as passive objects within the narrative.

Ultimately, today’s audience doesn’t have a problem with sex, glamour, or boldness. They respond to how relationships, consent, power, and sexuality are portrayed. Whether Toxic triggers a similar reaction will depend less on its provocative visuals and more on how those themes are handled within the film’s story.

Toxic releases on August 26, 2026.
