Toxic: Dil Raju Chasing Big Opening for Yash? Big Mistake?

Yash in Toxic ahead of Telugu release

Something interesting has been happening in the Telugu theatrical market in recent months. Audiences appear to be slowly finding their way back to theatres. Several theatres that were struggling with poor footfalls have started witnessing better occupancy in the last few weeks.

Films such as Maa Inti Bangaram, Chennai Love Story, Blast Zone, Lenin, DC, Korean Kanakaraju and Vishwanath & Sons managed to put up decent numbers. More importantly, many of these films followed a simple strategy: their makers did not burden audiences with heavy ticket hikes, which made it easier for regular moviegoers to walk into theatres. The result was not necessarily sensational openings, but steady and healthy footfalls.

Big films such as OG and Peddi have already shown that expensive tickets can become a double-edged sword. While hikes can boost the gross in the opening shows, they can also keep normal audiences away if the talk is mixed. And without strong footfalls, even a big star’s film can underperform.

Yet, Dil Raju appears ready to take that very risk with Toxic, which he is distributing in the Telugu states. Reports suggest that the film could have Rs. 500-600 tickets for early morning special shows, while regular shows during the first five days could also carry a hike of up to Rs. 200.

The question is: Is Toxic big enough to justify it?

There is no denying Yash‘s popularity after KGF. But Toxic has not generated the same kind of feverish anticipation as KGF 2. Even Dil Raju, one of the industry’s most experienced producers and distributors, would know that.

Perhaps the strategy is straightforward: extract as much as possible from the first weekend while the fan rush is at its peak. But that approach can backfire if the film’s content does not receive a strong response.

So Dil Raju’s decision raises an interesting question. Is he simply chasing a bigger opening because he knows the film might fall flat after the first weekend, or does he genuinely believe Toxic has enough demand to support these prices?

If the film gets terrific word of mouth, nobody will remember the hike. But if the response is mixed, those expensive tickets could become Toxic’s biggest enemy.

Dil Raju knows the Telugu market better than most. But this time, he appears to be betting heavily on the opening rush. Whether that gamble pays off or turns into an expensive mistake will be decided by the audience.
