August 14 is shaping up to be a major day at the Indian box office, with two highly awaited films releasing on the same date. Coolie stars Rajinikanth and is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, while War 2 features Jr. NTR alongside Hrithik Roshan.
This rare clash has generated huge excitement among fans. In just four days, the outcome of this box office battle will be clear. Overseas advance bookings have already started, and ticket sales in the Telugu states are expected to open tomorrow.
In recent years, ticket prices for major releases have often been raised during the opening week with government approval. Both Coolie and War 2 are not originally Telugu films, with Coolie being a Tamil production dubbed into Telugu and War 2 being a Hindi film.
Despite this, strong openings are expected as Rajinikanth has a huge Telugu market and Jr. NTR is one of the biggest stars in the region. Fans are eager to see whether ticket prices will increase for these dubbed releases, with sources suggesting a possible hike of Rs. 50 per ticket. A decision is expected soon. For now, Coolie is far ahead of War 2 in advance bookings overseas.
In North India, War 2 bookings have opened but the response has been average so far. If Telugu bookings had started earlier, the momentum could have been much stronger due to Jr. NTR’s local appeal. Early sales might have created a more positive perception for the film, and some industry watchers believe War 2 lost an advantage by not opening bookings in all languages at the same time.
In the Telugu states, bookings remain on hold as government orders on ticket pricing are still pending. The reason for delaying this process until the last moment is unclear, but without these orders, the producer cannot proceed.
If War 2 had been selling around 30,000 tickets per hour on BookMyShow in both Hindi and Telugu, it could have influenced Hindi audiences to book earlier. Booking numbers now play a big role in shaping audience perception.
Coolie’s strong Tamil advance sales are also impacting the Hindi market, as early momentum often sets the tone for nationwide performance. Unfortunately, War 2’s progress is being slowed by delays and competition from Mahavatar Narsimha and Coolie.
National chains in Karnataka have also not opened bookings due to the same pricing order issue, further affecting the film’s pre-release buzz.
