India is a largely secular country, and there is this imminent freedom of speech. But there is this fine line when it comes to social commentary and personal abuse, and this needs to be kept in mind all the time.
This particularly applies to the case of a comedian named Anudeep, who does stand-up comedy gigs in Telugu. His unnecessarily provocative comments on Andhra Pradesh, deputy chief minister, Pawan Kalyan has landed him in trouble.
Earlier, Anudeep had commented about the personal life of Kalyan and Niharika, by saying both of them have adequate experience in divorcing. This did not sit well with fans and Janasena supporters who called for corrective measures against the comedian.
A police case was filed at the Kakinada Police Station and adequate action has been taken as the department tracked the phone of Anudeep and traced him in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
This comedian was apparently with his father in the sacred Prayagraj pilgrimage, while he was arrested by AP Police, and he was transported to Kakinada by train. He is likely to be reprimanded by the police here and could be let out on bail later as most of his offences are bailable.
This could be considered as a strong warning to social commentators and stand-up comedians, as it is acceptable to comment on the political activities, but never okay to shift towards personal abuse.
