The CJI of India has given his decision on the menstrual plea submitted in the Supreme Court. Suryakant said that making menstrual days leave mandatory, women will be excluded from the workforce.
He further noted that women will start feeling less than men psychologically, if such a law is passed. Bihar already provides menstrual leave and the CJI welcomed voluntary decisions taken by the states or companies.
Earlier Justice Chandrachud too had expressed similar opinion when he was the CJI.
All talk about equality and empowerment are good. But today many women suffer from severe PCOS and PCOD issues. Many even have endometriosis, a severe condition. No matter how committed a woman is and how competitive she is, these conditions resulting from lifestyle and psychological reasons are a reality in women of present generation.
It is estimated that 1 in 4 women suffer from such problems in India. As the CJI says, companies giving menstrual leave voluntarily is a workable option. Of course, lifestyle changes and learning to mitigate stress are equally necessary.
