The voting behavior of government employees has always been a crucial factor in determining the outcome of elections in Andhra Pradesh. Their strong influence extends not only to their own votes but also to those of their family members, making them a significant voting bloc.
Historically, government employees have shown a tendency to favor the Congress party, and after the state’s division, their support shifted towards the YSRCP. Despite the TDP’s victory in the 2014 elections, there was only a slight edge in postal ballot votes compared to the YSRCP.
The TDP government, led by CBN, faced challenges in convincing government employees and union leaders to relocate from Hyderabad to Amaravati. Despite providing various facilities, including leniency, many government employees ended up voting for YSRCP in the 2019 elections.
One significant factor influencing their decision was YS Jagan’s promise to abolish the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), which resonated strongly with them. In the 2019 elections, the YSRCP garnered 47% support from government employees, while the TDP received only 27%, marking a significant 20% difference in postal ballot votes.
However, the latest survey suggests a shift in favor of the TDP alliance government, with over 57% of government employees supporting the TDP and only around 20% supporting the YSRCP. If this trend holds true, it could lead to the YSRCP facing its worst defeat in Andhra Pradesh’s political history, with the TDP receiving its highest percentage of votes since its inception.
Several factors have contributed to this potential shift in support, including dissatisfaction with YS Jagan’s administration, unfulfilled promises such as the relocation to Visakhapatnam, and neglect of demands for arrears and pending Dearness Allowances (DAs).
Many government employees are reluctant to relocate, which has further fueled their discontent and opposition to the YSRCP in the upcoming elections.
