The general trend is that the urban population are generally slow and low when it comes to voting turnout. This was particularly evident in the case of Hyderabad in the 2023 Telangana assembly election.
The shocking factor is that Hyderabad polled less than 50% votes in the assembly election last term with the approximate reading around 48%. This is a shockingly number with regard to the voting percentage in an educated pocket like Hyderabad.
In sharp contrast, we have the case of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, which has registered a sensationally good voter turnout.
Apparently, Chennai has reported over 83% voter turn out yesterday in the Tamil Nadu assembly election, which is a pretty significant number. The number might go slightly based on the final accounts that is going to come out soon.
The clear difference in the social responsibility of the citizens of Hyderabad and Chennai is blatant here and this is perhaps a strong lesson for the Hyderabad population to learn from Chennai.
Turning up to the polling stations to cast the vote is also becoming a big task these days and citizens are seeing it as a daunting challenge. This really needs to change.
Hyderabad city population had already faced several complaints on social media for simply not standing up to their basic duty of voting. And now that Chennai has set a strong example, with this enormous turn out, we shall wait and see if Hyderabad will take a lesson from the same.
There is this one particular social media post that is going viral, which says Hyderabad citizens have more interest in film releases them casting their votes. This reputation must be undone very soon.
