Telangana government’s grand plans to build 60-100 storey skyscrappers in the vacant lands around the Hussainsagar is not well received by the environmentalists as they fear the concrete jungle engulf the beautiful lake and minimize the lung space. Government had already deployed teams to survey the vacant lands around the lake but the government officials themselves say the project is not easy to materialize.
In 2000, the Forum For A Better Hyderabad knocked the doors of the high court against encroachments around the lake. The court then directed the state government to stop construction of any permanent structure on or near the water body or the catchment area of the lake. The Supreme court also voiced similar opinion.
Forum For A Better Hyderabad president M Vedakumar is gearing up to approach the court once again if the government do not drop its plans. The Hussainsagar lake was originally about 5,000 acres and due to several constructions around it, the lake has already shrunk to less than 1,000 acres and the proposed skyscrapers will only further add to the air, ground and noise pollution, due to increase in traffic
