The Telangana Transport Department has hit the jackpot with special numbers. On Monday alone, the Khairatabad transport office raked in a revenue of Rs. 45.98 lakh through the sale of fancy numbers.
The highest bid went for the TS 09 GE 9999 number at Rs. 17,35,000, while the lowest, TS 09 GF 0007, fetched Rs.1,01,999.
People eagerly seek out special numbers, such as lucky digits, birthdates, or memorable sequences, for their vehicles. Initially introduced two decades ago, individuals had to pay a fee for these unique numbers. Over time, the demand increased, leading to the adoption of an auction system, proving highly lucrative for the transport department.
Offices across three Greater Hyderabad districts are experiencing a windfall, with officials anticipating a revenue surpassing last year’s Rs. 72.7 crores if the trend continues.
The auction of fancy numbers in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Medchal districts is projected to generate Rs. 53.9 crores by September. The number 9999 remains a favorite, with the highest bid this year reaching Rs. 21.6 lakhs.
The enthusiasm extends globally, as demonstrated by a person in Dubai setting a Guinness World Record by paying Rs. 122.6 crores for the world’s most expensive car number plate.
