YCP Against Google @ Vizag: Lokesh Clarifies!

Google data centre in Vizag

Andhra Pradesh is finding itself in a contentious situation as the opposition YSR Congress is raising objections to development projects in the state.

One such project is the upcoming Google data centre in Vizag. The project has become a point of political debate, with the YCP allegedly spreading concerns and claims about its potential impact on local resources.

A major part of the criticism is focused on water consumption. The narrative suggests that the data centre could use large quantities of water and eventually contribute to a shortage of drinking water in Vizag.

IT Minister Nara Lokesh addressed these concerns in the Assembly today. He sought to clarify several claims and counter the misinformation surrounding the Google data centre project.

Lokesh stated that drinking water meant for human consumption would not be supplied to the data centre in Vizag. He said separate pipeline systems would be established and that only excess water would be used for the project.

He also stated that dedicated power grids would be established to supply electricity to the data centre. According to Lokesh, this would ensure that the project does not affect electricity meant for regular human consumption.

Lokesh further highlighted the development of new cooling technologies around the world. Such technologies could help reduce water consumption at data centres in the future.

Andhra Pradesh is pushing Amaravati and Vizag as major AI hubs in India. With the state aiming to attract large technology investments, the NDA government believes such projects are important for strengthening Andhra Pradesh’s technology ecosystem.

The government’s focus is therefore on ensuring that major technological developments come to the state while addressing concerns related to water, power and other resources. Lokesh’s latest clarification is part of that broader narrative.
