The politics of the Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has taken an interesting turn. After the alliance’s unilateral victory in the general elections, the TDP set its sights on the mayor’s seat. By increasing its strength in the council, it hopes to secure the post of mayor along with the standing committee.

On the other hand, the YSRCP is trying to prevent its corporators from switching parties to retain the mayor’s seat. As a result, alliance leaders and YSRCP leaders are holding a series of meetings with their respective corporators, which is attracting widespread interest.

In the March 2021 elections to the GVMC, the YSRCP won the mayor’s seat by securing the most number of wards. Out of a total of 98 wards, YSRCP won 58 wards, TDP 30 wards, Jana Sena three wards, Independents four wards, and CPI, CPM, and BJP won one ward each. Golagani Hari Venkatakumari was chosen as the mayor by the YSRCP leadership.

Since the YSRCP did not win a single constituency under the GVMC in the recent general elections, the party’s leaders and workers have become demoralized. In contrast, the victory in the general elections has filled the alliance party’s leaders and activists with excitement.

The alliance leaders, wanting to have control over GVMC, have decided to secure the post of mayor as well. However, as they need the support of at least 59 members, they started identifying YSRCP corporators who might be interested in joining the alliance parties. Following YSRCP’s election loss, 25 corporators proposed to voluntarily join the TDP.

In response to some corporators deciding to join TDP, YSRCP leaders began efforts to retain them. The party leaders held a meeting with the corporators in the mayor’s chamber under the chairmanship of former minister Gudivada Amarnath on Saturday evening. Only 30 corporators attended the meeting, and the absence of 28 left the party leaders stunned. It is reported that out of the 30 attendees, ten corporators strongly criticized the party leaders.

It is known that these corporators expressed anger, stating that they were not given even the minimum courtesy within the party. Reports suggest that former minister Amarnath was criticized by party members, who argued that he should focus on retaining the post of mayor rather than neglecting the concerns of the corporators.
