ICC has released its rating of the pitch that was used for the World Cup Final last month. The Narendra Modi Stadium’s pitch was rated ‘average’ by the ICC.
The pitch was rated very good by ICC match referee Andy Pycroft. But, it received criticism for being too slow by the fans and critics alike.
The final between India and Australia started with India batting first and having a good start followed by a batting-collapse. It ended with Australia winning the World Cup for a record sixth-time, breaking the trend of host bagging the cup since 2011.
Many fans were unhappy with the BCCI for choosing Ahmedabad for the final rather than Wankhede Stadium. Their arguments behind it was the crowd, which is passionate for the game in Mumbai as Wankhede Stadium had hosted the 2011 WC final. Also, India has a good record at Wankhede.
The Narendra Modi Stadium pitches has been in controversy several times in the past and one of the biggest reason for choosing it over Wankhede was its sheer capacity. It allows more than 110,000 viewers to sit and watch the match live.
This was one of the major points that upseted many fans as they blamed BCCI for choosing money over passion.
