Govt’s Toll Hike Sparks Outrage

The latest toll hike, implemented from April 1, has sparked a wave of public frustration, with many questioning the government’s promises regarding toll reductions.

Just months ago, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had indicated a possible toll rationalization in the next financial year. However, commuters now find themselves paying even higher charges on key highways such as the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, NH-9, the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, and highways around Lucknow.

Social media has been flooded with reactions criticizing the steep toll charges. One user sarcastically suggested that India should have a “full-time Toll Minister” to handle the growing concerns around toll pricing. Another questioned why vehicle buyers continue to pay RTO and other taxes when tolls remain excessively high.

Complaints about road quality and maintenance have also emerged, with users pointing out that while toll collection through FASTag is efficient, the process for addressing complaints about poor road conditions remains complicated. Some have proposed linking toll refunds to FASTag if road quality is subpar.

Dissatisfaction is also being expressed in a broader political context, with some calling ministers “reel” or “troll” ministers and questioning the credibility of official statements. Others have drawn parallels between the toll hike and concerns over governance, hinting at the power dynamics controlled by electronic voting machines.

Despite the backlash, the NHAI has defended the toll increase, stating that the additional revenue will support highway maintenance and expansion. However, for many commuters, the rising costs continue to outweigh any promised benefits.
