French farmers have protested by dumping manure and waste in front of the state buildings, fast-food chains, and supermarkets against the state policies and importation of foreign meat.
These farmers are members of various unions and associations that have been calling for fairer prices, better prices for their products, and more support from the governments. They have also been against the use of glyphosate, controversial herbicide, and expansion of fallow land which they claim leads to their diminished earning and competitive edge.
Among the most memorable protests of this kind was when a truck unloaded a large pile of manure in the parking area of a McDonald’s in Vesoul town, eastern France. According to the farmers, the fast-food chain favored imported meat to local produce and was lying to consumers on origin and quality of their products.
The French farmers’ protests have brought to light the challenges and uncertainties facing them including climate change, trade agreements, and health crises. These farmers hope that their actions will trigger a dialogue and a fair solution.
