According to a survey, international corporations produce more than 400 million metric tonnes of branded plastic per year. Of the branded plastic, the top five companies accounted for 24%, while 56 companies accounted for more than 50%.

With the help of more than 100,000 participants, the study identified 28,570 brand names that were present in 84 countries and categorised more than 1.8 million pieces of plastic debris.

The report emphasises the pressing need for waste management and plastic reduction on the part of corporations. Businesses need to act quickly to solve the worldwide challenge of plastic waste.

Thirteen firms account for at least 1% of the overall amount of branded plastic seen during audit events; the largest contributor, Coca-Cola, accounts for 11% of the issue. Nestlé, Danone, Unilever, PepsiCo, Mayora Indah, Mondelēz, Mars, and Salim Group are some of the other major players in the food and beverage industry.

Experts predict that 53 million tonnes of plastic will enter the ocean each year by the end of this decade, seriously harming marine life. Plastics can pollute groundwater on land and suffocate seabirds and turtles in the ocean. A legally binding global plastics treaty is presently being developed by a group of negotiators assembled in Canada.
