Ticketless Travel: How Shameless Have We Become?

Ticketless travel in Indian trains

Public behaviour reflects how much a society values fairness and accountability. Rules exist to create order and equality, not to burden people. When individuals think rules apply only to others, trust breaks down, and excuses replace honesty.

Recent train incidents show how some passengers deliberately travel without tickets, even in AC compartments. What’s worse, when confronted by ticket examiners, they argue, insult, or make false claims instead of accepting responsibility.

A few weeks ago, a government school teacher faced action for ticketless travel. Now, another woman has gained attention for doing the same and even hurling false allegations at the authorities who caught her.

Ticket Travelling Examiners (TTEs) deserve appreciation for staying firm despite verbal abuse. Their job is not easy, and enforcing rules in the face of arrogance takes real integrity and courage.

This issue isn’t about paying a fare. It’s about respecting public systems and the dignity of those maintaining them. Authorities should take strict action and stop showing leniency, especially when offenders clearly have the means to pay.

Public transport depends on honesty and discipline. When people ignore basic rules, it harms everyone. Rules may be simple, but following them keeps systems fair, functional, and worthy of trust.
