Gautam Gambhir ODI World Cup 2027 plan

After India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, attention will gradually shift to the next major ICC event. The team is expected to begin preparations for the ODI World Cup 2027 in the coming months.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir recently spoke about the team’s approach for the tournament. In an interview, he said the management is not rushing to finalise the squad. According to him, there is still enough time to evaluate players.

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The tournament is scheduled to take place in October and November. Gambhir noted that playing conditions in these countries can be challenging for batters.

He explained that pitches in South Africa often assist fast bowlers. Because of this factor, India will need players who can adapt to those conditions. The team management will carefully study the venues and pitch behaviour.

Gambhir said these conditions will play a major role in selecting the final squad. Players who perform well in pace friendly environments may receive more attention. The coaching staff and selectors will analyse performances before making decisions.

India are not expected to play a very high number of ODI matches before the tournament. Reports indicate that the team may play around 24 ODI games between October 2025 and December 2026.

These matches will give the management an opportunity to test different combinations. The team will closely monitor how players perform in various match situations. Such evaluation will help identify the best options for the World Cup.

Gambhir explained that several combinations may be tried during this period. The final squad will be selected only after detailed discussions between selectors and coaches. The management wants to ensure the most balanced team.

The IPL will also play an important role in the selection process. Gambhir said the team management will closely watch player performances in the league. Strong performances in the IPL could influence selection decisions.

He added that by the end of IPL 2027, the management hopes to have a clear picture of the squad. The tournament will provide additional insights into player form and fitness.

India have already played ODI series against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand recently. These matches have provided early opportunities to test players. The team will continue to gain experience through upcoming series.

After IPL 2026, India will host Afghanistan for an ODI series in June. The team will then travel to England in July for another set of matches. These series will provide useful preparation for the upcoming global tournament.

Later in the year, India are also scheduled to play against West Indies, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Most of these matches are expected to take place in India. These contests will help the team refine its combinations before the ODI World Cup 2027.
