India and Sri Lanka share a long bond, and once again, cricket has become a way for you to see that support in action. India has agreed to expand its Sri Lanka tour, using cricket to help a neighbour recover from a national crisis.
India adds T20Is to Sri Lanka tour
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has agreed to add T20I matches to India’s August 2026 tour of Sri Lanka. What was a routine Test tour now carries a larger purpose beyond results.
Original plan under World Test Championship
The tour was first scheduled as a two match Test series under the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. That plan changed after Sri Lanka asked for more limited overs games to boost revenue.
SLC seeks help after Cyclone Ditwah
Sri Lanka Cricket requested additional matches after Cyclone Ditwah caused major destruction in November 2025. Chairman Shammi Silva confirmed the decision on January 2, 2026.
Impact of Cyclone Ditwah
Cyclone Ditwah was one of Sri Lanka’s worst disasters since 2004. It killed over 600 people and affected more than two million. Homes, roads, and farmland suffered severe damage, leaving the country under heavy financial strain.
Cricket as a revenue lifeline
With funds tight, SLC turned to international cricket to generate income through broadcasting and ticket sales. An earlier plan for T20Is in December 2025 failed due to scheduling and broadcaster issues.
August 2026 becomes the window
August 2026 emerged as the best option for both boards. It allowed room for extra matches while fitting into India’s packed calendar. For you as a fan, it also means more India Sri Lanka action.
India’s support beyond the field
India’s help did not stop at cricket. Through Operation SagarBandhu, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force led rescue missions and delivered essential supplies.
Long term recovery and cooperation
India also announced a 450 million reconstruction package. The added T20Is now support Sri Lanka’s long term recovery and remind you how cricket continues to strengthen regional ties.
Number of T20Is to be finalised
The final count of T20Is is yet to be confirmed, though two or three matches are expected. Once again, you can see how cricket serves a purpose far bigger than just winning games.
