India suffered another setback in the ODI series against New Zealand as Washington Sundar was ruled out of the remaining matches with a side strain. The injury adds to India’s growing fitness concerns during the series.
Injury Blow After Pant Exit
This development comes soon after Rishabh Pant was forced to leave the squad before the Baroda ODI on January 11. Pant was also sidelined due to a side strain, leaving India short on options.
Sundar Leaves the Field Mid Match
Washington Sundar bowled five overs in the first innings before walking off the field. Dhruv Jurel came in as a substitute fielder following Sundar’s exit.
Despite the discomfort, Sundar came out to bat after India lost a few quick wickets. He scored 7 runs off 7 balls but struggled to run between the wickets.
Rahul Explains the Situation
KL Rahul stayed at the crease and finished the chase, helping India take a 1-0 lead in the series. He later spoke about Sundar’s condition during the partnership.
Rahul said he was unaware that Sundar could not run properly. He added that there was no need to take risks as the required rate was manageable.
Scan Awaited for Sundar
India captain Shubman Gill confirmed that Sundar would undergo a scan. He stated that the all rounder had a side strain and would be assessed after the match.
No Official Confirmation Yet
Pant was replaced by Dhruv Jurel earlier, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not yet confirmed Sundar’s withdrawal. No replacement has been announced so far.
Rising Fitness Concerns
With the T20 World Cup 2026 approaching, these injuries raise concerns for the Indian team. Managing player workload and fitness will be crucial in the coming months.
