India’s Super 8 journey in the T20 World Cup 2026 began on a disappointing note. South Africa defeated India by 76 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Chasing a target of 188, India collapsed for just 111 runs. This defeat also brought an end to India’s impressive 12 match winning streak in the tournament.
South Africa faced early trouble after slipping to 20 for 3. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh bowled with pace and accuracy, putting India firmly in control during the opening overs.
The momentum shifted when David Miller and Dewald Brevis came together. Miller smashed 63 runs off 35 balls, while Brevis added 45 from 29 balls. Their partnership steadied the innings and changed the course of the match.
Tristan Stubbs provided the finishing touch with an unbeaten 44 off 24 balls. His knock helped South Africa post a competitive total of 187 for 7 in 20 overs.
India’s chase never found momentum. Ishan Kishan was dismissed for a duck in the first over. Tilak Varma managed only 1 run, while Abhishek Sharma scored 15 but failed to build on his start.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav scored 18 runs but could not anchor the innings. Washington Sundar made 11 runs, but the move did not work in India’s favour.
Shivam Dube fought hard with a 42 run knock and tried to keep India in the contest. However, he received little support from the other batters.
Rinku Singh was dismissed for a duck, and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. India were eventually bowled out for 111, suffering a heavy 76 run defeat.
The loss is significant for India, especially while playing at home. Despite a strong start from the bowlers, the batting unit failed to handle the pressure of the chase.
India will need a much stronger batting performance in the upcoming matches to stay alive in the tournament.
