India have got the result they needed in Sri Lanka, but their WTC 2025-27 campaign is still far from settled.
The Galle win has improved India’s points, but they still have several Tests left and very little room for mistakes if they want to reach a third WTC final.
The focus is no longer on the Galle result. It is on how many more wins India can collect from here.
A clean sweep would give them another important win and improve their WTC points percentage.
The second Test in Colombo, starting on August 23, therefore becomes important for India’s qualification hopes.
India have eight Tests remaining after the Sri Lanka series. They will play 2 Tests vs New Zealand and 5 Tests vs Australia. India need to win these matches to remain in the top two race.
Winning five or six of the remaining Tests would put India in a much stronger position, although the final requirement will depend on how the other WTC contenders perform.
The five Test Australia series will be India’s biggest test. It will come towards the end of their WTC campaign, meaning India could enter the series knowing exactly what they need.
There will be little room for dropped points if the race remains tight. Before Australia arrive, India will face New Zealand in a two Test series.
These matches could become extremely important. India cannot afford to treat the series as less important because every Test win will affect their final PCT.
India’s pace attack will also be important in the remaining Tests. Jasprit Bumrah’s availability, along with the development of India’s younger fast bowlers, could be a major factor in the tougher matches ahead.
Now they need consistency. The next eight Tests could decide whether India return to the WTC final or miss out.
