Pakistan cricket has once again landed in controversy. A recent report claims that a player from Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad was fined after allegedly misbehaving with a female hotel staff member in Sri Lanka.
The reported incident took place in Kandy, where the Pakistan team was staying during the tournament. The squad was accommodated at the Golden Crown Hotel during their matches in the city.
According to reports, the incident occurred shortly before Pakistan’s final Super Eight match against Sri Lanka. A player from the squad allegedly behaved inappropriately with a female housekeeping staff member.
The situation reportedly escalated when the staff member shouted and asked for help. Her reaction alerted other hotel employees, who quickly reached the spot.
Hotel staff members then handled the situation and informed the Pakistan team management. The matter was reportedly brought to the attention of team manager Naveed Cheema.
Hotel authorities were said to be unhappy with the behaviour and demanded strict action. However, the issue was temporarily resolved after the team management apologised to the hotel officials.
Following the incident, the team manager reportedly imposed a fine on the player. The identity of the cricketer involved has not been made public so far.
Despite the immediate settlement, the matter may not end there. Reports suggest that the Pakistan Cricket Board could review the case after the team returns home.
If required, the board’s disciplinary committee may decide whether further action is necessary. The development has added to the challenges already faced by the team during the tournament.
Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign has been disappointing. The team failed to reach the semi finals after missing out on qualification due to net run rate, even though they defeated Sri Lanka in their final Super Eight match.
Incidents involving players during overseas tours have occasionally created controversy for Pakistan cricket in the past as well. Such issues have often drawn attention from fans and cricket observers.
Now the focus will be on whether the Pakistan Cricket Board decides to take stricter disciplinary action once the investigation is completed.
