R Ashwin has finally responded to the controversy surrounding his serve drinks remark about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
After the youngster impressed in the Zimbabwe T20I series, the former India spinner made it clear that his comments were never meant to insult the 15 year old.
Vaibhav had a tough debut tour in England and came under heavy criticism after struggling against the short ball.
Despite, the youngster bounced back in style against Zimbabwe, scoring two half centuries and winning the Player of the Series award.
Ashwin said his earlier comment was only about giving Vaibhav time to learn. According to him, spending a few matches outside the playing XI would help the youngster understand international cricket better and improve his game.
He also made it clear that he never wanted Vaibhav to be dropped. The former spinner also defended Vaibhav against backlash over his weakness against short pitched bowling.
Ashwin pointed out that even great batters had weaknesses, and judging a 15 year old after just a few innings makes no sense.
Ashwin also urged fans not to expect Vaibhav to perform like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma in every match.
He believes the teenager is still learning the game and needs time, patience and experience to become a complete player.
Vaibhav has already silenced many haters with two fifties and the Player of the Series award in Zimbabwe.
