RCB in Big Trouble

It was supposed to be a day to be proud of for RCB. After years of waiting, they finally won their first IPL title on June 3. Fans were excited. Bengaluru was ready to party.

But what followed on June 4 was a disaster. During the team’s victory parade outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, 11 people died and many were injured.

Now the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has clearly said RCB is “prima facie responsible” for the mess.

The Tribunal was hearing a case filed by Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, who was suspended after the incident.

But the CAT has now said the police were not at fault. Instead, the blame goes to RCB and KSCA (Karnataka State Cricket Association).

“RCB didn’t take permission from the police. They posted on social media and lakhs of people showed up,” the CAT observed.

3 to 5 lakh people gathered near Vidhana Soudha and Chinnaswamy Stadium. But there was no crowd control, no barricading, no arrangements.

RCB didn’t inform the police in time. They gave less than 12 hours’ notice which was not enough for security setup.

Even KSCA didn’t apply for permission. They only sent a letter “informing” the police but didn’t officially request for arrangements.

As the tragedy unfolded, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah ordered action. Officials from RCB, event company DNA Networks and KSCA were booked.

Top cops including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and DCP Shekhar H Tekkannavar were suspended.

But with the CAT now clearing the police, the heat is back on RCB and KSCA. Also KSCA secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam resigned, taking moral responsibility for the incident.

RCB’s first ever IPL win should’ve been a moment to cherish. But the way the celebrations were handled has raised many questions. Big teams carry big responsibilities not just on the field but off it too.

Calling lakhs of fans without planning is dangerous. A moment of joy turned into a moment of sorrow. This should be a wake up call for RCB and every franchise in Indian sports.

Celebrating with fans is special. But celebrations need rules, planning and safety.Big win!
