India’s plans for the New Zealand ODI series have been affected as Shreyas Iyer is still waiting for Return to Play clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence. The delay comes just days before the squad announcement.
Clearance Delay at Centre of Excellence
Shreyas Iyer was expected to leave the Centre of Excellence on December 30. His stay has been extended by at least one week. He is batting without pain, but his fitness levels are not yet at the required standard.
Strength Is the Main Issue
The problem is not batting. Iyer lost almost six kilograms after his abdominal injury earlier in the year. He has regained some weight, but doctors believe the muscle loss has reduced his power, movement, and stamina.
A senior BCCI official confirmed that his batting was never in doubt. The priority is to rebuild strength to match international fitness demands. The medical team does not want to rush and risk a repeat injury.
New Fitness-First Approach by BCCI
In recent years, the BCCI has changed its policies. Clearances now depend on fitness data instead of match schedules or pressure. It reflects a strict, long-term approach to player welfare.
Likely to Miss NZ ODI Series
Due to the delay, Shreyas Iyer is almost certain to miss the three match ODI series against New Zealand on January 11, 14, and 18. Selectors are expected to receive a medical update before the final squad list.
His absence creates a gap in the middle order and affects leadership plans as he is the ODI vice-captain.
Domestic Return Also Affected
Iyer was earlier supposed to play for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on January 3 and 6. Those plans are cancelled. Clearance may come only around January 9, which could limit him to knockout stage matches.
Limited match time before the international season raises questions about his readiness even after fitness approval.
