Hero to Zero? Shubman Gill Tries Kohli, Falls Flat

Shubman Gill Booed at Old Trafford

Shubman Gill’s press conference before the Manchester Test sparked a storm and the English crowd didn’t let him forget it.

On Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Team India’s captain was booed and jeered as he walked in to bat, a direct reaction to his comments about England not playing in the “right spirit of the game” during the Lord’s Test.

Gill had pointed fingers at openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley for being 90 seconds late after the innings break in the previous match and that tension clearly carried over into Manchester only now it was the crowd giving it back.

As Yashasvi Jaiswal walked off at 120/2, Shubman Gill walked in and was greeted with loud boos from the stands.

It got even worse when he misjudged a sharp delivery from Ben Stokes and was trapped LBW for 12.

He went for DRS but it didn’t help. Three reds confirmed the umpire’s call and the crowd jeered again as he walked back to the pavilion.

Just two Tests ago, Gill looked like he was on his way to rewriting history. He had scored 585 runs in four innings, including a double century and two tons. His average? A staggering 146.25.

But since Lord’s, the dip has been clear. Scores of 16, 6 and now 12 show he’s struggling to hold on to that dream form. His average has now dropped to 88.43 still good but no longer great.

Here’s the other layer to the story. In his early days as captain, Gill seemed to be trying to channel the aggressive approach of Virat Kohli but this isn’t the same Kohli aggression.

Kohli backed up his fire with performances under pressure, especially in tough English conditions.

Gill on the other hand is still learning. The outburst about England’s conduct might have been a show of leadership but it also exposed him to a different kind of challenge the mental one where crowd and pressure meet performance.

He needs to understand that being aggressive isn’t just about calling out opponents it’s about staying calm and stepping up when it matters most.

The boos at Old Trafford were loud and Gill’s fall was quick. But this is still the same batter who destroyed records at Edgbaston.Just shut up.
