Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has sent a defamation notice of Rs 50 crore to Uttam Saha, an official of Kolkata’s Argentina Football Fan Club. The notice follows Saha linking Ganguly’s name to the Lionel Messi event controversy.
Legal Action and Police Complaint
Along with the legal notice, Ganguly has also filed a complaint with Kolkata Police. He stated that false and damaging remarks were made, which seriously harmed his personal and professional reputation.
Origin of the Messi Row
The controversy began after Uttam Saha told a journalist that Ganguly was behind the proposed Lionel Messi G.O.A.T India tour. He further claimed that Satadru Dutta, who is now arrested, was only acting as a frontman.
Ganguly Denies All Allegations
Ganguly has strongly denied these claims. He has stated clearly that he has no involvement in organising the event and rejected the allegations as completely baseless.
Statement to PTI
Speaking to PTI, Ganguly confirmed sending the defamation notice and filing the police complaint. He said individuals should not make accusations without evidence and accountability.
Impact on Reputation
In his complaint, Ganguly said the statements caused him mental stress and damaged his public image. He stressed that his reputation was built over years of hard work as a cricketer and sports administrator.
Police Begin Investigation
Kolkata Police have started investigating the matter. Officials are examining the statements made and their impact on Ganguly’s reputation.
Cancelled Messi Event
Ganguly was scheduled to honour Lionel Messi along with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on December 13. The event was cancelled after chaos erupted at Salt Lake Stadium when Messi left early.
