Worst Catching Team? Former Star Warns India

Varun Aaron warns India over poor catching

India finished the T20 World Cup 2026 group stage unbeaten with four straight wins. However, former pacer Varun Aaron has flagged a serious concern that could trouble the team in the knockout rounds. He pointed to India’s poor catching standards as a major risk.

Varun Aaron stated that India have been among the worst catching teams in the world over the past year. He observed that the side drops two to three catches in almost every match. This worrying pattern has continued in the ongoing tournament.

The issue was evident again in the recent match against the Netherlands in Ahmedabad. India missed several chances in the field. One moment even saw a dangerous collision between Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh while attempting the same catch in the final over.

The ball struck Surya on the chest, though he escaped injury. The incident highlighted a clear lack of communication and coordination in the field. Aaron described this as a massive problem that cannot be ignored at this level.

He warned that dropped catches in the Super 8 or semi final stages could cost India the tournament. Aaron added that India’s catching percentage has dipped below 70 percent, which is unacceptable for a top international side.

Despite the errors, India successfully defended 190 runs and defeated the Netherlands by 17 runs to top the group. As tougher matches against teams like South Africa approach, fielding will come under sharp scrutiny.

India possess strong batting and bowling units. However, unless the catching improves quickly, it could turn into their biggest weakness in the chase for the T20 World Cup title.
