Lokesh Ruined Mani Ratnam: Thug Life Is the Result

Lokesh Kanagaraj Ruined Mani Ratnam

Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, was released in theaters on June 5th and has received disastrous responses from audiences and critics.

Many viewers, after watching Thug Life, have commented that it doesn’t feel like a typical Mani Ratnam film. They cite the poor screenplay and a storyline that resembles usual revenge dramas as reasons.

On social media, many have observed that while the first half of Thug Life felt like a Mani Ratnam film, the second half seemed as if Mani Ratnam was mimicking the narration style from Lokesh Kanagaraj’s movies.

Usually, Mani Ratnam’s films feature clear narration with exciting, tension-building twists, but Thug Life significantly deviated from his established style.

It appears he drew inspiration from recent action movies by Lokesh Kanagaraj and other Tamil films, which is why the second half was constructed in a way that caused Thug Life to falter in many places.

He sets up a decent narrative in the first half, concluding with an acceptable interval point, but the second half feels like a completely different movie, leading to Thug Life’s poor reception among audiences.

Tamil audiences are therefore suggesting that Mani Ratnam should adhere to his own distinctive style of narration and screenplay and not be influenced by the screenplays of directors like Lokesh Kanagaraj.

According to reports, due to the overwhelmingly poor responses from audiences, Thug Life has almost crashed at the box office and seems likely to end its theatrical run earning below Indian 2.
