With the development in AI and machine learning, the automobile industry is reaching new levels of automation everyday. A couple of decades back, a driverless car was considered as a distant dream but today it is a reality that is changing lives of millions. Some cities in the USA are also offering driverless cab service to customers. Millions of people are already using Tesla’s self-driving cars. In such a situation, it is only natural to wonder when this facility will be available in a country like India.
If you have been enthusiastic about these auto-driving cars then this statement by an Indian Union Minister can disappoint you. The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari has said that self-driving cars will never be introduced in India. The reason cited by the minister is to safeguard millions of jobs.
Nitin Gadkari said that self-driving cars will take the jobs of several drivers and he will not let that happen. Millions of people in India are working as cab drivers or as private chauffeurs who will be under direct threat if these cars are introduced in India.
The biggest manufacturer of self-driving cars, Tesla Inc. has been considering entering the Indian market but the government wants the company to manufacture in India itself and not China.
