Meta is already facing a severe crisis. People’s trust eroded years ago due to thousands of accusations of data privacy issues, and recent actions by Meta are further damaging its tarnished reputation.
Amid this declining image, Instagram has become a prime suspect. They recently encountered issues like the ‘translation bug,’ and now, the USA is taking legal action against them for a solid reason.
33 U.S. states, including California and New York, are suing Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. They allege that Meta, through its social media platforms, has contributed to a youth mental health crisis by fostering addiction.
The states claim that Meta consistently downplayed the risks and knowingly promoted addictive social media use among young individuals.
Brands like Meta have traditionally targeted children to establish brand loyalty from a young age. In Meta’s case, the company aims to attract younger users, potentially increasing advertiser interest with the hope that these young consumers will continue purchasing products as they grow up, ensuring long-term engagement.
Certain research also suggests that the effects extend beyond consumerism, manifesting in mental health issues such as depression, insomnia, and anxiety. This is a grave accusation, and eight more U.S. states have joined the initial 33 in taking legal action.
Meta is not the only platform facing such legal issues; TikTok and YouTube are also grappling with similar challenges. In the long term, these issues appear concerning, as social media not only affects mental health but also diminishes humanity’s attention span.
