A 28-year-old Indian national, Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli, has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon after allegedly attacking two teenagers aboard a Lufthansa flight from Chicago to Frankfurt on October 25.
Mid-flight violence shocks passengers
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, the incident occurred mid-flight after meal service. Usiripalli allegedly stabbed two 17-year-old boys with a metal fork, injuring one in the shoulder and the other in the back of the head.
Attack reportedly unprovoked
Witnesses say the assault happened without any provocation. Court filings state that one of the victims woke up to find Usiripalli standing over him before being struck. The suspect then reportedly made a gun gesture, placed it in his mouth, and pretended to pull the trigger.
Female passenger and crew targeted
The situation escalated further when Usiripalli allegedly slapped a female passenger and attempted to attack a flight attendant. Lufthansa crew members managed to restrain him until the flight was diverted to Boston Logan International Airport, where authorities arrested him.
Suspect’s background and legal consequences
Officials said Usiripalli was in the U.S. on a student visa and pursuing a master’s degree in biblical studies. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison, supervised release, and a substantial fine.
Concerns over flight safety and mental health
The case raises serious concerns about passenger safety and the need for stronger mental health screening measures during international air travel.
