California has officially declared Diwali a public holiday, marking a historic moment for the Indian community in the state. Diwali, celebrated as the festival of lights, is the most significant festival for Indians worldwide.
California has witnessed rapid growth in its Indian diaspora, largely due to Silicon Valley’s tech industry. This decision recognises the importance of Indian traditions and shows respect for cultural diversity in the state.
According to estimates, around 8 lakh Indians live in California. Many are professionals working across tech, education, and healthcare sectors, while others are second or third-generation Indian Americans.
The bill was passed with a clear majority in both chambers of the California legislature. Schools and colleges will remain closed on Diwali, though courts will continue functioning.
California now joins several US states that have officially recognised Diwali as a holiday. The move is seen as a step towards inclusivity and a reflection of the multicultural spirit of Silicon Valley. Diwali falls on October 20 in 2025.
