F-1 Visa Panic

A student on an F-1 visa just got a panic after they missed the April 15 Deadline for filing taxes in the US. With the country going through an immigration crackdown under Trump, the student is in fear that this could be the reason for visa revocation.

Taking to social media, the F-1 visa holder shared they hadn’t filed forms 8843 or 1040-NR, both required for non-resident students earning income in the US. While it is not something you should ignore, it might not possess as devastating an effect as they fear.

Missing the deadline can lead to penalties if you owe money. However, most F-1 students don’t owe anything, especially if they worked only on campus or earned less than the standard filing threshold.

Netizens and fellow students were quick to calm the person down. Many said they’d forgotten to file too, even during the OPT and H-1B stages, and nothing happened as long as they filed once they remembered.

A visa revocation is unlikely unless there’s a serious pattern of violation or fraud. The only thing missing taxes can cause is complicate things later like future visa renewals, green card filings, or even a change of status.

Nonetheless, if you miss the tax deadline, fill out both forms as soon as possible. Pay any penalties that are owed and move forward without fear. Don’t leave it unchecked.
